Travel in a 4WD convoy across the desert to reach Hamedela in the Danakil Depression. In the afternoon, continue the journey to the iconic salt flat of Lake Assale, where you’ll witness a dramatic sunset over the reflective salt crusts. This unique location is one of the lowest and hottest places on Earth. Camping is set up under the stars with clean bedding and a mattress. Day 2Dallol Geothermal Fields & Erta Ale Volcano Dallol Geothermal Fields & Erta Ale Volcano Begin the day early with a sunrise visit to the Dallol geothermal site, a surreal and colorful landscape filled with bubbling sulfur springs and mineral formations. Continue to explore salt and mud caves near the Dallol crater, then enjoy a picnic breakfast near the site. Visit the salt plains and swim in the cold pool of Lake Karum before meeting local salt miners. After lunch in Hamedela, drive toward the Erta Ale volcano. At sunset, hike to the rim of the caldera to witness the active lava lake glowing in the darkness. After the visit, return to base camp for a night under the stars, with all camping gear provided. Day 3Salt Lake Afdera & Return to Semera Salt Lake Afdera & Return to Semera Start your day with an early breakfast before heading to Afdera, one of the lowest and hottest points in the Danakil Depression. Visit the salt farms and observe the traditional techniques used in harvesting salt. You’ll have time to enjoy the view of the Salt Lake and the surrounding surreal desert landscapes. After lunch in Afdera, return to Semera by 4WD. Depending on your preference, you may overnight in Semera or take an afternoon flight back to Addis Ababa. This marks the end of your extraordinary journey through one of the most geologically active and culturally unique regions in the world.
