10 Days Tanzania Great Wildebeest Migration Mara River Crossing
Overview
Tour Overview
Come see the magnificent wildebeest migration in Tanzania at discount prices. The months from July through to September see the herds heading north from the western Serengeti into Kenya and the Masai Mara Game Reserve. By July the wildebeest reach their first great obstacle, the Grumeti River. This is the first of the remarkable river crossings to witness and come late July, when the herd head to Kenya's Lamai Wedge and Mara Triangle, they are again faced with Mara River. The depth of both river crossings makes drowning a high possibility for the wildebeest, and both are filled with hungry crocodiles on standby, ready to take advantage of their distress. The dangerous crossing of the crocodile infested Mara and Grumeti Rivers is a breath-taking spectacle, not to be missed. You will also visit the best of Tanzania's National Parks: Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park, Ngorongoro crater, and the famous Serengeti National Park.

Itinerary
Kilimanjaro
You'll get picked up from the airport and driven to your lodge in Arusha. If your flight gets in early, there's time to walk around the lodge grounds, take a dip in the swimming pool, or check out any activities they have available.
Arusha
After breakfast, head into Arusha for some last-minute shopping, then drive to Tarangire National Park with a lunch stop along the way. Your first game drive starts in the afternoon, and you'll see herds of elephants and baobab trees scattered across the landscape.
Tarangire National Park
Following breakfast, you'll drive to Lake Manyara National Park for a full day of game viewing. The park sits at the base of the Great Rift Valley with savannah, rocky areas, and acacia woods. Look for flamingos, tree-climbing lions, buffalo, zebras, hippos, and giraffes throughout the day.
Lake Manyara
After eating breakfast, drive up the Rift Valley escarpment to reach Ngorongoro Crater. You'll go through registration and then descend into the crater for a full day of game viewing. Lunch happens at a picnic site near the hippo pool, and you'll continue driving before heading back to the lodge.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Following breakfast, drive through Ngorongoro Conservation Area toward Serengeti National Park. There's a stop at Olduvai Gorge to visit the museum and see fossils from 1.8 million years ago. Game drives continue on the way to the lodge with wildlife sightings along the route.
Serengeti National Park
An early start after breakfast means a full day of game driving across Serengeti National Park. You'll have a picnic lunch and spend the afternoon looking for wildlife across the plains. Late in the day, head back to the lodge for the night.
Start early after breakfast and head to the Northern Serengeti for game drives until sunset. With a picnic lunch, you'll search the plains throughout the afternoon for different animals. Return to the lodge in the late afternoon for an overnight stay.
After breakfast, game drive around the Lobo area looking for carnivores and migration groups heading to the Mara River. You'll check out Lobo Hills with their large acacia trees, then move through Bologonja and Wogatende areas. If timing works out, you might see wildebeest crossing the river where hippos and Nile crocodiles live. Dinner and overnight in the Serengeti.
Following breakfast, spend another full day game driving in the Lobo area searching for carnivores and migration groups. You'll explore Lobo Hills and the surrounding areas toward the Mara River, where wildebeest and zebra face hippos and crocodiles during their crossing.
Your last morning starts with breakfast, giving you time to take in the final views of the plains. After that, you'll be transferred to the airstrip for your flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport in Arusha, where the tour concludes.

I recently spent 10 days on safari in the Serengeti and witnessed the migration. This was the fourth time that I've seen the migration, and it was just awesome as the first time. Fortunately, there were far fewer visitors than normal. I had great sightings of lions, cheetahs, and a couple of...

During the Great migration period here, we observed two different herds of wildebeest with accompanying zebras come to the far edge of the river, thinking they were going to cross but eventually opted against it. Then finally we saw a herd of about 300 wildebeests comi...
