Later on, we'll drive back to the lodge for dinner and your overnight stay. Ngorongoro's caldera is home to one of the most breathtaking wildlife sanctuaries on earth. The fertile pasture and permanent water sources of the Crater floor sustain a resident population of approximately 20,000 large mammals. Animals are free to roam and they choose to stay due to favorable conditions. With much of the Crater floor covered in grassland, grazing animals such as wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, buffalo, elands, kongoni (Coke's hartebeest) and warthogs are abundant. Additionally, the swamp and forest areas provide essential resources for hippos, elephants with impressive tusks, waterbucks, reedbucks, bushbucks, baboons, vervet monkeys and some of Tanzania's last remaining black rhinos. The steep inner slopes provide a habitat for dik-diks and the rare mountain reedbuck.
